How to Play Royal Defense
Each level gives you a road and a fixed number of empty spots along it. Enemies walk that road from one end toward the other, and nothing matters except stopping them before they finish the trip. Click a spot to decide what stands there: an archer tower for reliable damage, a magic tower, artillery for slow heavy hits, or a barracks, which is the odd one out because it doesn’t shoot at all — it puts soldiers on the road who physically block the way. Every kill pays gold, gold buys more towers and upgrades, and you spend it while the fight is still happening. There is no calm planning phase once a wave starts.
That’s the loop that makes this harder than it looks. Gold arrives at exactly the rate you’re killing things, so a defense that’s slightly too thin earns slightly too little, which makes the next wave slightly worse. Two things break that spiral: heroes you summon onto the battlefield, and spells you drop on whatever is getting through. Both are emergency tools, not opening moves. Finishing a level banks stars and unlocks upgrades that carry forward, so a map that beat you once is genuinely easier on a second run with a stronger tower line behind you.
Tips to Hold the Road
- Open cheap, escalate later. Artillery hits hard and slowly, which is mostly wasted on thin early waves. Broad, affordable archer coverage kills more early, and killing more is how you afford the expensive towers at all.
- Upgrade before you expand. A tower already sitting in a busy spot gets more out of an upgrade than a new tower gets out of a quiet corner. Build fresh only where a stretch of road has nothing covering it.
- Use barracks to buy time, not damage. Soldiers stop enemies from walking, which parks them inside your towers’ range for longer. A barracks in front of a cluster of towers quietly improves every one of them.
- Hold your spells until something leaks. The right moment is when a wave is already past your line and no amount of gold builds a fix in time. That moment comes in almost every hard level.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Royal Defense free to play?
Yes. It runs free in your browser on desktop and on touch screens, with no download and no account.
Can I upgrade towers while a battle is running?
You can, and you’re expected to. Gold arrives from kills during the wave, and improving a tower mid-fight usually beats saving it up.
What are heroes and spells for?
They’re your answer to a wave that’s breaking through. Heroes get summoned into the fight and spells hit the road directly, so both work best held back for the moment your towers alone aren’t enough.
